WordPress

WordPress has been my default Development Platform for the past three years. The WordPress Dashboard really makes website management as a webmaster as simple as writing an e-mail in most cases. The benefits of wordpress are numerous, the plugin repository, the text editor, themes, discussion tools, media uploader, the list goes on and on. In this article i’ll talk about why I use wordpress and what benefits it will grant you as an end user.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is primarily known as a blogging platform, the most popular of which is wordpress.com,  this site relies on hosted blogging offered by WordPress to the user community,  there is no software to install, no cost, just a basic login to wordpress.com and you have access to begin writing your own blog.

One of the negatives about WordPress.com is that you don’t have control over the file library, everything is locked down and secured by WordPress to offer you a standard box of tools, features and functionalities that are limited in scope but still quite impressive.

The other option, and one that I most frequently recommend is WordPress.org,  which is the downloadable app version of the platform, it allows you to download and install WordPress on your own self hosted installation.  The requirements for this version are a domain name, web hosting, a database (I choose MySQL) and your WordPress files.  Once you have all this you can read my forthcoming article about installation of WordPress to see the detailed process.

After WordPress is installed and you create your initial user account, you will have access to a myriad of tools and features offered only to users of this version of the platform.    The ability to freely add and modify themes and plugins is very beneficial to anyone looking to get away from a cookie cutter looking site.

This is where I can come in and help…As a WordPress Developer it is my job to take your goals and objectives and turn them into a working live website.   I combine the usage of PHP, CSS3, HTML5 and Graphic Design, I then apply these technologies in combination with WordPress’ offerings  and create an easy to use Platform that anyone regaurdless of computer skill level, can edit and maintain.
